Yesterday I spoke briefly about the Montecristo Open Series Eagle and it made me think about the first time I smoked one of the new additions to the Montecristo line… The first cigar I chose was the Regata and, although I’m not sure why, the one thing that struck me was how interesting it was and how different it tasted from the Montes we’ve all been smoking for years.. As soon as the Open series came out I stopped into one of the many cigar shops in vancouver and spoke to the staff about their opinions of these new cigars. The funny thing was that each staff member had their preference and I wasn’t sure which one I should try first and so I picked one of each and home I went… Maybe because of the shape or maybe because of the amount of time I had that day, I started with the Regata.. First few puffs revealed the Monte profile I was used to but then it started to develop into something quite sweet and more complex.. As time went by I realized that the Regata wasn’t as weak as the Eagle so I instantly thought that maybe newer smokers wouldn’t gravitate to it as much as the others in the new line.. I fell in love with it from day one and have smoked quite a few since then… In wrapping this up I’d like to say that the Regata, in some degree, resembles original Montes but gives you a few surprises along the way…

I’m a firm believer that for every Montecristo cigar there is a Montecristo devotee. The Open Eagle, pictured above on the box it WASN’T sold in, is 5 7/8 inches long and a 54 ring gauge. This is the biggest of the Open series that came out last year and a lot of controversy has been surrounding these new members of the Monte family… This series is targeted at new smokers who may be a bit apprehensive about tackling Cuban tobacco that is known for it’s power and full flavors. This is a great, milder cigar that is very easy to get along with in casual surroundings with close friends on a deck at a golf course on a hot day… My personal favorite from the open series is the Regata with it’s sweet tobacco flavor and fruity notes.. My feelings are that if you are new to cigars and are curious about trying something with a larger ring gauge then the Open Eagle would be a safe bet!!!

I’m not sure if Herbert von Karajan was a cigar smoker but something tells me that if he was I believe the Montecristo Petet Tubos may have been a cigar he would have smoked from time to time.. I think that this little mareva, in how it conducts it’s behavior, is strikingly similar to any one of Mozart’s classics… This cigar is not unlike the Monte 4 and many compare the two to the point where they say it is the same cigar.. I agree that there are similarities but this one delivers more sweetness with notes of vanilla, coffee and chocolate… Also too you’ll find no shortage of creaminess and that Montecristo spiciness that pairs so well with a good port after a rich meal… I also love the fact that it is protected in a tube that can be carried around when you go out for the night.. This cigar has all of the drama and complexity of a Cuban classic!!

OK, so the Montecristo A is definitely NOT a Canadian cigar but since we’re known for saying “Eh” at the end of each sentence up here in the “Great White North”, I thought I’d start off this segment with that little lame attempt at humor. OK, the Monte also has nothing to do with this regal Egyptian king and queen but I love how cigars look in photographs, especially when the cigar has nothing to do with the content of the photograph.. It only seems to have a bizarre look about it and like a magpie, I seem to be drawn to bright colors……..This cigar was a gift this evening, given to me by a very good friend who I fish with now and then and who bought a house next door to ours.. When will I smoke it?? I don’t really know…. Another bit of a mystery here is that he has no idea how old this cigar is…. He believes that it has had at least 10 years or more in the humidor so rather than reaching for my torch and lighting it right now, I’m thinking that maybe this little gem ( or not so little ) should be smoked on a special occasion…… Decisions decisions………

We have a week and change of weather in the Vancouver area that is perfect for lawn work … Not golf!!! Not Fishing!!!!! Olympics are over…….. Reality is setting in like a grey fog bank over North Vancouver….. I have about 5 Montecristo Edmundo Tubos that need some attention too and I’m feeling that it could go one way or the other at this point in time…….. I could kick back in my buddy’s garage and we could smoke a few Montes or I could get the rake out and go into battle with the moss on the lawn that has really taken over in the last two years. On one hand the upcoming rain this week will make lawn work a messy proposition and kicking back with a good friend and a cigar would be the smart choice…..Yeowwww, that is one ugly sight, isn’t it?? I know it should be dealt with before the summer months come and springtime is usually the best time to get at it….but…….. Think how much happier I’ll be kicking back with a beer and chilling out in the middle of the day……..Oh yeah, there’s another thing too…….. Think of the mess I could make in the house after all of that muddy trampling around….. AND … I HATE taking my shoes off during the day……….. Nope, I think I’ve made up my mind.. I’m going to hang out for the next few days and not overdo it… Kickin’ it in the neighbor’s garage might just be what the doctor ordered……. Whew !.. I’m really glad I thought all of this through.

I was looking around the internet tonight for different collectables that had to do with Montecristo and I ran across a wonderful espresso cup and saucer that would be perfect in anyone’s smoking room.. Quite often after dinner we fire up our Pavoni and make coffee that goes beautifully with a cigar and brandy.. OR a cigar Scotch and coffee… well…… It boggles the mind to think about all of the combinations but if it pours, we’ve tried it with a cigar…… I came across the perfect espresso cup…..Yes… That would do just fine….But….. As I kept searching I ran across the figurine that would look great on any desk where decisions are made, prices are met and the appreciation for beauty runs rampant…. Why not consider Esmeralda by Giuseppe Armani…. Not extremely expensive and more than fitting in any environment where great Cuban cigars are smoked!

The subtle notes of cedar and tobacco are brilliantly combined with a slight citric spice.. Even if you are not a Montecristo smoker you will stand tall in a crowd of high achievers and survive life’s toughest challenges like the winner you are.

Cigars sold out of Cuba last year revealed that Montecristo had 21% of the market but all is not well with the Cuban export. Many factors may contribute to the decline of exports that some say is down 8% from the year before….My belief is that the ailing economy isn’t helping and people’s constant changing feeling towards smoking in general can also add to the problem….. Now, look at it THIS way… IF people only understood how nasty cigarette smoking is to your health they would make a beeline to their nearest cigar shop and stock up on handmade ( And a few machine made ) cigars… Today is the day to try to convert a cigarette smoker and have either him or her come back from the dark side…. I have recently discovered that smoking cigars outdoors can be an enjoyable pastime and in my opinion a lot more flavorful than cigarette smoking!!!!

This post is probably going to be one of the shorter publications in this site. This year some time which is undisclosed for the time being, we should see a new cigar from Montecristo. This time we’ll probably be seeing an El in a robusto extra format. The new Montecristo Grand Edmundo will probably have all leaves that have aged for 2 years and will come out with a 52 ring gauge and a length of 5. 7/8 inches. …. If this tastes anything like a larger Edmundo then we are in for a treat. I have to say that I’m a fan of the larger ring gauge cigars since I think they are a little easier to smoke because of the smoothness and round full flavors. .. ….. I don’t think we’ll be waiting too long…. I’m guess the moment they are ready to be sold, they’ll taste great!!!

I was never much of a cowboy but grew up on a ranch on the prairies in Canada. I always thought that cows tasted great but that was as far as it went when it came to my passion for that creature. As a kid I noticed that all winter you had a real docile creature on your hands but as soon as they had their calves in the spring, they wanted to kill anything in sight in order to keep their young safe… Well, that little detail was all I needed to know in order to make up my mind to get as far as I could away from cows and do anything else in life to make a living… I’ve had a lot of different jobs in my life from selling stuff to making stuff to doing stuff…. My feelings are that maybe I like doing stuff with my hands and breathing fresh air as I do it.This little cigar has inspired me to take a lot of photographs and it also made me remember all of the cigar smokers I met when I was younger… There was one cowboy in our home town that I’ll never forget… He was the village idiot and town drunk who owned a ranch beside one of my uncle’s farms… My uncle noticed one day that he had been missing a couple of calves in the spring and mentioned it to his cigar smoking cowboy neighbor. The neighbor told my uncle that he thought he saw me in my uncle’s pasture a week before… Now this is a bit of a weird and inaccurate fact because I was attending a private school a few hundred miles away when the cows were being rustled.. Next day I was pulled out of social studies class at 10:00 AM in the morning and told to walk into a room where a couple of RCMP were waiting to question me.. At the age of 15 I was a small, baby faced kid and as I look back at that day I can’t help but wonder how the cops must have felt as they asked me about my whereabouts the previous Sunday… Well, I was in church the day in question and had almost 400 witnesses to back up my claim… It was a wasted trip for our discouraged law enforcement officials and I was told I could return to class… To this day I don’t know of anyone else in my peer group who have ever been questioned about and under the suspicion of being a cattle rustler..Life can get really interesting when there are cowboys around.
